Coaching Certification/Coaching Clinics
This program offers the three courses required by the State Education Department to meet coaching requirements for non-certified physical education teachers, all other certified teachers, non-teacher coaches, and volunteers of interscholastic athletics. The three courses are Philosophy, Principles & Organization of Athletics;Health Science Applied to Coaching; and Theory and Techniques of Coaching. A registration fee is required for each course. Courses required by the State Education Department to meet coaching requirements for non-certified physical education teachers, all other certified teachers and non-teacher coaches of interscholastic athletics."PHILOSOPHY, PRINCIPLES & ORGANIZATION OF ATHLETICS"Topics will include: legal considerations, local, state and national policies relating to athletics, personal standards for the coach, public relations, safety procedures, budgets, etc. (45 clock hours). Each participant must bring the current New York State Public High School Athletic Association Handbook (available through your Athletic Director) to the first class."THEORY & TECHNIQUES OF COACHING"This course will include basic concepts common to all sports such as: objectives, rules, regulations and policies; teaching methods; performance skills; technical information (offense, defense strategies); organization and management of practices; care and special training and conditioning of athletics in specific sports; care and fitting of equipment; special safety precautions and officiating methods. In addition, an internship and evaluation in a specific sport is required. (12 clock hours plus 80 clock hours coaching internship). Each participant must bring the current New York State Public High School Athletic Association Handbook (available through your Athletic Director) to the first class."HEALTH SCIENCE APPLIED TO COACHING"Biology, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, psychology, and sociology containing selected information which is "related to coaching"; human growth and development, safety; care to injuries, training and conditioning of athletes. This course will not satisfy first-aid requirements.Additional Requirements for Coaching Certification:Teachers: completion of #1 and #2.Non-Teachers: completion of 1, #2, #3, and #4.1) First Aid Skills and Knowledge or Responding to Emergencies.2) Current CPR Card.3) Child Abuse & Identification - to be completed within first year of coaching.4) SAVE (Violence).
It is the responsibility of the Board of Education to employ only coaches who meet the requirements as outlined in the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education. The chief school officer has the responsibility to see that all coaches, once employed by the Board of Education, complete the necessary courses and to determine that the coaches are keeping their First Aid, AED and CPR skills current. Each school district must keep permanent records on persons who have been and are currently coaching in the district. It is recommended that the director of physical education and athletics maintain these records. Information on the current coaching staff should be listed in the School District Plan for Physical Education.
